Questions
- How do you count syllables?
- Say the word slowly and count the vowel sounds you hear, not the vowel letters. "Fire" has one vowel sound in most accents, "orange" has two and "family" has three.
- How accurate is this syllable counter?
- Words in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (about 117,000 words and names) are counted from their pronunciation, which is exact for standard American English. Other words are estimated from their spelling and marked with a dotted underline.
- Why do some words have two syllable counts?
- Some words are said differently by different people. "Every" is three syllables said slowly (ev-er-y) and two said quickly (ev-ry). We count the first pronunciation in the dictionary.
